Comedy Club on State Street Friday February 8, 2008

I went to the Comedy Club on State Street this past Friday and got to check out two stand up comics. The feature comic was John Burton. He is a self described fat balding mand. His target audience would be mid twenties and up. He's been comic for 5 years. The positive about him were his wide spectrum of topics and his. The negative thing about him was that he didn't capture the adiences attention immediatley. This is a characteristic that is hard to describe.

The headliner was Claude Stewart, the first person to be killed by an alien in "Starship Troopers". Imagine a very engergetic Beaker form the Muppets and that is Claude Stuart. He had a bit of a dirty mouth but didnt' rely heavily on fowl language for his jokes. He started off talking about methamphetamines in Beloit and never looked back. Double standards in race and sex, tourette's, and ADD are a few topics he covered. Warning: If you sit close to front he will use you in his act!!! R-rated. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture with either of the comics. Next time!!!

My step-dad and sister love to go to the Comedy Club in Duluth, MN where they live. One time, they sat in the front, and they said the guy picked on them the entire time, like you mentioned at the end. My step-dad likes to joke around, too, so he was making fun and playing along with the comedian. At the end of the show, the comedian went up to him and thanked him for it and said he had never had that much fun doing a show before. I could only imagine what happened; wish I had been there.

Are these mainly local comedians at the club or do they bring in small name comedians from other places?

In terms of the material of their jokes, did you get the impression that these guys were mimicking professional comedians? Perhaps not the jokes themselves but mabey their mannerisms? The reason I ask is because last time I went to a comedy club a majority of the jokes were stolen.

The headliners are actually professional comics. The feature comics are most likely professionals as well. When it comes to stolen jokes, comics differ so some steal and some don't. But I can't generalize about all the comics that are booked at the club. Thanks for the questions. I'll talk to the owners and get some exact answers for u. Keep the questions coming.
